The Stuart Broncos won a thriller at Cope Stadium at UNK against the Sumner-Eddyville-Miller Mustangs on Friday, November 22nd and took home their first State Championship in program history.
The Broncos entered the D6 State Championship game with one goal in mind and that was to be the first team in program history to bring home the State Championship Trophy. Stuart had been to the State Championship game one time before in 2013 and came away as the State Runner-Up. This time was different though as the Broncos would not be denied.
Stuart faced plenty of adversity in the game as they would trail by 16 points in the first quarter. This didn’t deter the Broncos though as they would continue to fight back to make it an 8-point game at halftime trailing 24-16!
In the second half, the Broncos were able to outscore the Mustangs 26-14! It was the rushing attack from quarterback Kayde Ramm and running back Owen Littau that were able to allow the Broncos to gain more balance with their offense.
The Broncos also looked strong with their defensive play as senior Gavynn Mustin came up with a massive interception late in the fourth quarter to give the Broncos possession down just 2 points. Mustin would return the pick all the way to the Mustangs 15-yard line. Then on 3rd and goal from the 4-yard line Ramm would put the final touch on the game with a 4-yard touchdown run to give the Broncos the 42-38 win!
“Just very proud of the boys and the way they battled and hung in there. It didn’t start in our favor but we just kept pushing away. Made a huge defensive play at the end and hung on. Huge win for our program and our community. Just proud.” – Coach Schurman
KBRX would like to congratulate the Stuart Broncos on a historic season and their first State Championship in program history!
